Fall Semester 2009

ABEN 499/696 - Design & Regulatory Issues for Biomedical Devices (3 credits)
Biomedical device overview and definitions, in-vitro diagnostic devices, FDA regulations, design control guidance, good laboratory and manufacturing practices, electronic hardware and software design, IRB, IBC, IACUC, clinical trials, and real-world case studies. Prerequisites: Senior level standing in engineering.

BUSN 399 - Survey of Management for Non-Business Majors (3 credits)
This course introduces non-business majors and non-degree seeking students to the basic functions and activities of managers. Students will become familiar with classical management principles, as well as modern management techniques, based on the concepts of planning, organizing, leading and controlling.

HIST 499 - Vietnam: 125 Years of Conflict I (3 credits)
The history of Vietnam from the 1850s to the present focusing on French colonial rule, American involvement in the region, revolutionary warfare and Vietnam's emergence as an autonomous, independent state.

LANG 199 - Dakota Language I (3 credits)
An introduction to the Dakota language; essential grammar, pronunciation, and high-frequency vocabulary to develop conversational proficiency.

MIS 399 - Applied Business Intelligence (3 credits)
Business Intelligence as applied to managerial decision making. Examination of techniques including business analytics, data visualization, scorecards, dashboards and data mining. Business performance management as an approach to decision making will be stressed.


Spring Semester 2010

ACCT 796 - International Financial Reporting Standards (3 credits)
Introduces the conceptual framework of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and compares the differences in accounting standards between U.S. GAAP and IFRS. Available to accounting major graduate students with intermediate accounting background. Prerequisite: ACCT 312.

AGEC 499/696 - Export Management (2 credits)
Develop skills to help managers avoid the common and not-so-common missteps that can create regulatory headaches and strip them of international customers and profits. Participants will be introduced to international business professionals and a peer network that will discuss the critical elements of operating an export business.

BUSN 399 - Survey of Marketing for Non-Business Majors (3 credits)
This course introduces non-business majors and non-degree seeking students to the four basic areas of marketing: product, price, place and promotion. The course will also cover consumer behavior and strategic marketing.

CE 499/696 - Design of Masonry Structures (2 credits)
Principles of design and analysis of reinforced masonry members, design of beams and lintels, serviceability criteria, walls under out-of-plane loads, load bearing walls, columns and pilasters, and shear walls. Prerequisite: CE 404

ECE 499 - Advanced Cardiovascular Engineering (3 credits)
This course seeks to prepare students to discover and disseminate new knowledge in the area of cardiovascular engineering. Students select a cardiovascular engineering research project and throughout the course perform all the necessary steps to submit a journal manuscript. Research partnerships and projects with industry and other researchers around the world may be part of the class. Prerequisites: ECE 487/687.

ECE 796 - Computer-Aided Verification (3 credits)
Theory and practice of formal verification methods such as decision procedures, model checking, and deductive reasoning. Abstraction and refinement techniques. Applications of formal methods to hardware verification.

ENT 299 - How to do Science: A Complete Research Experience from Proposal to Poster (2 credits)
A hands-on introduction to the entire scientific research process including developing a question, performing experiments, and presenting results. Students will learn how to do research and apply that knowledge to an independent research project they will conduct concurrently with a research mentor on campus. Prerequisites: BIOL 150 and BIOL 151.

HIST 499 - War and Memory: 20th Century Asian Conflicts (3 credits)
This class explores 20th century war and conflict in Asia through film and memoir, focusing on the idea of human memory and viewing conflicts through the eyes of those who experienced them firsthand.

IME 499/696 - Methods of Precision Manufacturing (3 credits)
Fundamental principles and applications of methods for precision micro- and nano-scale manufacturing of discrete parts and assembled products made of metallic and non-metallic engineering materials.

LANG 199 - Dakota Language II (3 credits)
An introduction to the Dakota language; essential grammar, pronunciation, and high-frequency vocabulary to develop conversational proficiency. Prerequisite: Dakota Language I or the equivalent.

MATH 499/696 - Monomial Ideals (3 credits)
Basic commutative algebra, monomial ideals and how to graph them, parametric decomposition of monomial ideals, chains of monomial ideals, graphs and simplicial complexes. Prerequisite: MATH 421.

MATH 796 - Introduction to Financial Mathematics (3 credits)
Stochastic models based on Brownian motion. Elements of theory of pricing and theory of arbitrage in stochastic financial models.

POLS 499 - Issues in Public Policy (3 credits)
Provides an overview of public policy analysis, from development to implementation to evaluation. Students explore these skills through the in-depth examination of one or two current public policy issues.

PSCI 499 - Special Topics in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1 credit)
Recent advances in pharmaceutical research. Pharm.D. students only.
