Rising Scholars Program Peer Mentor Position Information

Description, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Peer mentors in the Rising Scholars program help students meet academic goals by serving as accountability partners, teaching studying skills, and making campus and community referrals to fellow undergraduate students. Each mentor is assigned a small caseload of students (around 8), who they meet with once-a-week throughout the semester. Within these meetings, mentors help their mentees monitor grades, plan their weekly schedules, and share tips and tricks to help students be successful at NDSU. Many mentees are first-year, conditionally admitted students; however, anyone can opt into the mentoring program. Mentors are strong students who show a genuine concern for the wellbeing and success of their peers.
  • Mentors are expected to hold weekly meetings with their mentees, document attendance and meeting summaries in Navigate, and attend a weekly staff supervision meeting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Attention to detail and organization
  • A well-defined knowledge of personal study skills that contribute to success
  • Ability to work comfortably with students from diverse backgrounds
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 at the time of application and throughout employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a mentor
  • Applicants who are available to mentor the full academic year
  • Knowledge of other academic support programs on the NDSU campus

Compensation

  • This is a paid position. Compensation amount will be included in the official position posting.

Work Location

  • ACE Tutoring, which is located in the lower level of the West Dining Center.
