BIO

TIM O. PETERSON is a Professor of Management and Department Chair of Transportation, Logistics, & Finance in the College of Business at North Dakota State University.  He teaches undergraduate classes in the vital competencies needed by all people to be good organizational citizens.   He has been the opening act for Stephen Covey and spent eighteen months as a professional trainer.  He has been engaged in Gallup Strengths development since 2001.  He is a Certified Strengths Educator and Strengths Coach.  His research interests are managerial leadership, work-life competencies, the scholarship of teaching, and the application of information technology to organizational issues.  He has published in the Academy of Management Education and Learning, Academy of Management Executive, Performance Improvement Quarterly, Journal of Leadership Studies, Journal of Management Education, Journal of Leadership Education, and Global Journal of Entrepreneurship.   He is currently on the review board for the Journal of Management Education, Organization Management Journal, and Management Teaching Review.  He has been recognized for his teaching ten different times and was recently named the 2022 Peter J. Frost Mentor by the Management & Organizational Behavior Teaching Society.  He serves on the boards of Theatre B and the West Fargo Educational Foundation.  Prior to starting his academic career, he served for 25 years in the U.S. Air Force retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1991.He earned his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in 1988.

Research Overview

Our accrediting body calls for three types of scholarship: Discovery, Applied, and Teaching and Learning. My discovery scholarship is in the area of managerial leadership behaviors. My applied scholarship is in the area of followership behaviors in the healthcare field. My teaching and learning scholarship is in the area of the psychological impact of grading on students' behaviors.

Current Research

I am currently working on a manuscript on the critical managerial leadership behaviors across seven crisis types, which is an extension of my earlier research. On the applied front, my co-author and I are working on the impact of employee engagement on corporate social responsibility. In the area of scholarship of teaching and learning, I am finalizing a manuscript on the impact of academic hardiness on student performance.

  • Past President of the Midwest Academy of Management, the management & Organizational Behavior Teaching Society, and the Southwest Academy of Management.
