In our individual sessions, writer and consultant discuss anything that might help the writer (e.g., audience expectations, clarity of the writing, writer's purpose, grammar, models, the writing process). The writer brings disciplinary knowledge and an understanding of the assignment and expectations. The consultant brings a wealth of experience in writing and reviewing writing. The sessions are informal, non-evaluative, and free to NDSU students, faculty, and staff.

While NDSU is in its period of Remote Teaching & Learning, the Center for Writers (CFW) will provide online sessions by using Blackboard CollaborateUltra, which provides audio, video, and document sharing.
Students who do not have a reliable internet connection, please contact the CFW at email@example.com.
Please follow these procedures for online sessions:
1) Scheduling an appointment
a. You should schedule your appointment through our website (above).
b. You must schedule your appointment at least 12 hours in advance.
c. After you have made an appointment, you will receive a confirmation email, which includes the link for your session.
2) Preparing for the session
a. Please review our instructions for using Collaborate on our website.
b. On the morning of your appointment, send the following to your consultant (their email address is in your appointment confirmation email):
i) The document you are working on. If you prefer to share a document that can be viewed/edited in real time by both parties, include a OneDrive link. (Please note that consultants do not review papers before the session, and they do not directly edit papers.)
ii) Your phone number so the consultant can reach you in case the two of you cannot connect well through Collaborate.
iii) Other materials that may be useful (e.g., the assignment sheet or professor feedback).
3) Participating in the session
a. At the time of your session, access the platform through the link in the confrmation email.
b. Make sure that your computer has microphone and speakers—a headset is best since it eliminates problems like feedback and interference.
c. If you run into difficulties:
i) Use the Chat function in Collaborate to communicate your problem to your consultant.
ii) If you are unable to access Collaborate, email your consultant.
iii) Be sure you have your phone ready in case the writing consultant calls you
iv) Keep your phone on silent/vibrate mode so that it doesn't interrupt the session

The Center for Writers
During the regular academic year, undergraduate students may make two scheduled appointments (click on the link at the top of this page).
Canceling Undergraduate Appointments
Undergraduate students may cancel appointments through the our scheduling system.

- You may make appointments up to three weeks in advance and until a day before the session.
- You may make a maximum of one appointment per week.
- You may schedule appointments through the link atthe top of this page.

Canceling Graduate Appointments
- You must cancel at least 12 hours before your scheduled appointment.
- If you cancel your appointment less than 12 hours before it is scheduled and fail to show up, the appointment will be counted as a "no-show".
- After 3 "no-show" appointments, you will no longer be able to make appointments in advance. You will, however, be able to have Same-Day Sessions (see below).
- You may cancel appointments through the same system where you scheduled them.
Same-day Graduate Appointments
- During the regular academic year, we limit scheduled appointments to one per week because we are serving 2,000+ graduate and professional students. If you would like to visit us more often, you can schedule a same-day appointment.
- Email firstname.lastname@example.org to be added to the weekly "Same-Day" list. Students on the list will receive daily emails at approximately 8:30 a.m. with the available appointments for the day. Please reply as soon as possible because the appointments will be given to the first students who reply. If you haven't heard from us by 9:00 a.m., then there are no available appointments for the day.
- The "Same-Day" email list is reset every semester. Students must email the CFW if they wish to remain on the list for another semester.

- Allow students to drop off papers for proofreading and editing
- Work on documents not authored by the writer visiting the Center
- Write or rewrite papers for students
- Guarantee that a paper will (or should) receive a specific grade
- Criticize the assignment a student has been given
