NDSU has been designated as R1 Very High Research Activity by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. This is the highest classification possible and is presented to only the top research institutions in the country.  In 2021, 137 institutions attained R1 status. Within the six-state upper Midwest region, North Dakota State University was one of the three universities to achieve this prestigious designation.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers programs leading to the Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in either Chemistry or Biochemistry.  Programs of study are individually tailored to the needs of each student. Research programs encompass a broad range of molecular sciences. Many faculty have interdisciplinary research programs which either blend together the traditional divisions chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology, or combine one of these divisions with those of physics, engineering, or materials.  Click to review Faculty research interests.
