James M. Sugihara, 101, honorary doctorate ’99

was a nationally-known chemist who served in many administrative roles at NDSU. He was dean of the College of Chemistry and Physics until 1973 and dean of the College of Science and Mathematics in 1973-74 and 1985-86. He was dean of the Graduate School and director of Research Administration from 1974 to 1985. In 1984, he served as interim academic vice president, and he was interim director of Student Academic Affairs from 1987 to 1988. Awarded professor emeritus status in 1989, he also was interim chair of the Department of Polymers and Coatings in 1990-91.
