Meeting With Your Advisor

Faculty advisors in the Department of Communication are here to help you successfully navigate your program and the many opportunities available at NDSU.

You can find your advisor's name, view their availability for meeting, and schedule an appointment with them through Bison Advise (formerly Navigate). Step-by-step directions can be found here.

Pre-Communication Coursework

The first three semesters of coursework in the Department of Communication are designed to introduce you to your major and help you establish fundamental competencies needed to succeed in communication-related industries. Your Pre-Communication coursework includes:

  • COMM 101: Majors and Careers in Communication
  • COMM 110: Fundamentals of Public Speaking
  • COMM 112: Understanding Media and Social Change
  • COMM 114: Human Communication
  • COMM 212: Interpersonal Communication
  • COMM 220: Persuasion
  • ENGL 120: College Composition II

You must receive a passing grade in Pre-Communication coursework to be formally admitted into your major and take 300- and 400-level courses. This curriculum structure gives you time to explore your strengths and find your professional passion before taking specialized coursework. While you are in the Pre-Communication part of our program, you can change from one of our degree programs to another without extending your graduation timeline.

Gaining Professional Experience

Acquiring professional experience in your field will set you apart from other candidate on the job market. Internships help you to learn more about possible careers and select the most helpful electives in your coursework. Interning can also provide a foot-in-the-door, with many companies finding entry-level positions for their best interns.

To that end, students in our programs complete a 3-credit internship as part of their major requirements. The Department of Communication and the NDSU Career Center provide many different resources to help you explore careers and secure an internship.

You can schedule an appointment with Olivia Vogt, the department's Internship Coordinator, or career counselors at the Career and Advising Center via Bison Advise (formerly Navigate).
