Admission Requirements
The Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials graduate program is open to all qualified graduates of universities and colleges of recognized standing. To be admitted with full status to the program, the following requirements must be met:
- The applicant must hold a baccalaureate degree from an educational institution of recognized standing.
- The applicant must have adequate preparation in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related area, and show potential to undertake advanced study and research as evidenced by academic performance and experience.
- At the baccalaureate level, a cumulative grade point average (GPA) in all courses of at least 3.0 or equivalent is required. Students with a previous graduate degree with a GPA of 3.0 or equivalent may be admitted in full standing.
- A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper based) or 79 (internet based) or an IELTS score of 6 is required for international students.
- A GRE score is also required for international students. A GRE subject (Chemistry) score is not required, but highly recommended for international applicants.
Students who do not meet all requirements for admission or have deficiencies in prerequisite course work, but show potential for successful graduate study, may be admitted under a conditional status. Evidence must be provided showing that the applicant's potential is not adequately reflected by his/her record. After meeting the specified standards of performance set by the department, the student, in consultation with the major adviser, may request a change to full graduate standing. Students may not earn more than 12 semester graduate credits in the conditional status. The request for change must be submitted to the Dean of the Graduate School by the adviser and approved by the departmental graduate program director or chair.
Application
The graduate program in the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials accepts applications from candidates with backgrounds in chemistry, material science, chemical engineering, polymer science, physics, and other broadly defined multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary areas. To apply, please visit the Graduate School for detailed instructions. Please submit the complete application file along with the application fee to the graduate school directly.
Although there is no application deadline, applicants are encouraged to submit all application materials to the Graduate School before April 15 of the upcoming academic year.
Official transcripts (transcripts having an appropriate seal or stamp) of all previous undergraduate and graduate records must be received by the Graduate School before the application is complete. When a transcript is submitted in advance of completion of undergraduate or graduate studies, an updated transcript showing all course credits and grades must be provided prior to initial registration at North Dakota State University.
Three letters of recommendation are generally required before action is taken on any application. Personal reference report forms, as well as other application forms, can be obtained from the Graduate School or the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials.
If you have any questions regarding the application and admission process, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact Dr. Andriy Voronov for further information.
