Construction and Maintenance

The Facilities Management Construction and Maintenance team provides all construction services from architect selection, programming, design development, construction documents, code review, bidding, contract award, and project management for the Capital Projects on the NDSU Campus.  As part of the project management services, we have the responsibility for compliance with North Dakota Century Code, SBHE and NDSU policies as well as management of the project budget.  We also have developed and are constantly updating the NDSU Campus Design Guidelines which help ensure our facilities are constructed to high quality standards.  Our team is here to assist NDSU Departments with remodeling and renovations to existing facilities.  We will provide a detailed estimate, manage the process from start to finish, and work to ensure the process is seamless and as non-disruptive as it can be.   Our group assists in long term Campus Master Planning and can assist departments with their planning efforts.  We also maintain campus maps and utility infrastructure drawings.

NDSU maintenance staff is always available for responsive and efficient building and system issues. We have licensed mechanics, electricians, plumbers, and skilled craftsman to assist with any of your needs. It is our dedication to provide quality work with a timely response to keep NDSU running efficiently. Our trades shops are made up of carpentry, cabinet shop, electrical, key/locks, painting, plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning.  Our team manages the following contracted services: elevators, air compressors, fire alarms, fire suppression, and emergency generators.

Current Projects

Aldevron Tower

This project includes an approximately 74,000 square foot, six-story addition connecting to the existing Sudro Hall. It will be located on the northeast corner, south of Residence Dining Center. The project will include:

  • Instructional labs and inter-professional collaborative learning  spaces, allowing enrollment expansion, inter-professional education training, and helping avoid accreditation concerns.
  • Teaching space
  • A multi-bed nursing skills lab, simulation labs and control rooms for observation, debrief rooms, and a nurse station.
  • Exam rooms with control rooms for observation
  • An assessment lab and a skills lab
  • Several video conferencing rooms
  • Student study areas and flexible huddle rooms
  • Library space
  • Offices

Program consolidation into one building which will allow sections of the College of Health Profession to move out of leased spaces. This will lead to increased inter-professional educational opportunities for students and enhance collaborative learning among students and gain better instructional efficiencies for faculty, staff, and students within the College.

The project will include several add-alternates to fit-up the fourth and sixth floors. These alternates will be accepted if the bids come in favorably. If we are not able to accept these alternates, the building structure will be in place and we will fit-up the spaces when funding allows. Theses spaces will be used for several purposes:

  • A simulated -pharmacy instructional lab, including prescription processing, medication therapy management, and sterile and non-sterile compounding labs, telepharmacy, and institutional pharmacy space.
  • Move further resources out of leased spaces and into the addition.

Hastings Hall

Hastings Hall will be fully renovated to accommodate the offices of NDSU Human Resources and Payroll which are currently located off campus. The full project will include:

  • Complete asbestos abatement of the building.
  • Demolish the interior and fit-up with new office space, conference rooms, and a training room.
  • New bathrooms to meet current codes and accessibility requirements. The existing piping has reached the end of its life and will be replaced.
  • The building has a split entrance with stairs going both up and down. A small addition will be created to make room for an elevator.
  • New doors, ceilings, lights, and all finishes will be replaced.
  • The HVAC, electrical, and fire alarm system are past their useful life and will be replaced.
  • A fire sprinkler system will be added to the entire building.


Richard H. Barry Hall

The renovation project within Barry Hall will create opportunities for the University to host more guest speakers and industry events. The value of a large event space for NDSU downtown could be tremendous, and it will help advance the goals of greater external engagement and create a shared downtown space that also supports program activities in Architecture, Agriculture, and the Arts. Donors see the value in having an event center and have backed up their support with funding. The space also has the potential to become an active learning classroom to help enhance the students’ experience.

The project will include renovating the former ND Trade Office area into a flexible event space. The space will incorporate moveable tables and chairs, and projectors for speaking engagements. The project will include the following:

  • Completely renovating the second floor area above the Ag Country Auditorium.
  • The current offices will be removed, creating an open space for events.
  • New ceiling, lights, HVAC modifications, carpet, and other finishes will be upgraded to create a premier event room.
  • Expanding and shifting the existing restrooms to provide a staging area.
  • Improving the first floor entry and adding a dish room, while adding space for the catering kitchen on second floor.
  • Upgrading the elevator as required to add a stop to second floor.
  • Enlarging the windows to enhance the look and feel of the space.
  • Upgrading mechanical and electrical systems as required.
Sugihara Hall

Sugihara Hall will be a 104,825 square foot laboratory intensive building and will be four stories tall plus a penthouse. It will be located on the corner of Centennial and Albrecht. During programming it became apparent that the new building will be most efficient by demolishing the Geosciences building and using the entire site directly north of Dunbar. Once construction is complete, the existing Dunbar will be demoed and the area will be turned into plaza to connect the west entry of the Memorial Union to the newly created green spaces.

  • Numerous research labs will be fit up along with separate teaching labs that are sized effectively for teaching and research environments.
  • Work space for graduate students that is separate from the labs.
  • Office space that is accessible without the need to enter research labs.
  • Classroom space will be incorporated into the design.
  • Student spaces for studying and meeting.
  • Support space for all building activities.
  • Proper fire protection and alarming.
  • Energy efficient building design – all aspects from the building envelope to the mechanical systems will be reviewed.
  • An elevator and all other building components necessary to meet current ADA requirements.
  • Expanded electrical and cooling capacity to meet today’s teaching and research equipment needs.
  • New fume hoods with the latest controls to replace the current ones that are obsolete and very difficult to maintain.
  • A new chemical storage room with proper ventilation and chemical suppression.
  • Proper chemical storage in labs.
  • A loading area for building deliveries.
  • A generator backup to protect sensitive research equipment.
  • Connecting skywalks installed between the Memorial Union, Ladd and Science Hall.

Past Projects

Catherine Cater Hall

The current design for the New Residence Hall encompasses an approximately 130,000 sq. ft., six-story tall building containing around 390 beds that will be targeted towards second year students. The first floor will incorporate the hall’s building services, public and community spaces, such vending, laundry, hall director office, community room, and tentative community kitchen, along with separate apartments for a Residence Hall Director and a Faculty-in-Residence.  Floors two through six will each be separated into two wings that will accommodate all of the student resident rooms along with resident commons spaces. Each wing will house a 39-student ‘community’ composed of approximately nineteen 2-bedroom, double occupancy units with a shared bathroom and one separate single occupancy RA suite with bathroom along with a community study room. The two-bedroom double occupancy units average 630 sq. ft. each and the RA unit is 250 sq. ft. Each floor of two communities will share a central floor lounge, smaller study/huddle spaces and floor support spaces.
