Pacella addresses graduates
An estimated 267 students from the College of Human Development and Education participated in commencement on May 11. Three doctoral students were hooded, with 41 Masters and 223 Bachelor’s degree recipients crossing the stage. One of our graduates, Marissa Pacella, represented the student body as the commencement speaker at the morning ceremony. Marisa is a West Fargo native who earned a B.S. in Hospitality and Tourism Management. During her time at NDSU, she was active on campus, including serving as student body vice president, a student senator, and a member of Blue Key Honor Society. Marisa has accepted a position as a resource development associate with the United Way of Cass-Clay.
NACUFS Scholarship
The excitement in the Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) Program continues! HTM senior Laura Jennen was selected as one of three NACUFS Clark E. DeHaven Scholarship winners for 2019. This $5,000 scholarship is awarded from the National Association of College and University Food Services. Laura is the second NDSU student to receive this award. The first one was in 1999. Laura is serving her second term as secretary/treasurer for the NDSU Hospitality Student Association. She is currently doing an internship in Florida.

Outstanding Volunteer Award
Justin Pieterick, a lecturer in Health and Physical Education, recently received the Outstanding Volunteerism Award from the Fargo Public Schools (FPS) Development Foundation. The award recognizes Justin’s outstanding contributions to the Adopt-a-School Program. It’s a wonderful acknowledgement of his contributions!
Faculty retirements
Two HDE faculty members are retiring this year.
Dr. Ardith Brunt has been at NDSU for 17 years in the Dietetics Program. She coordinated the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) and was of tremendous assistance in maintaining high pass-rates on the RDN exam and accreditation of both the DPD and Dietitian Education Program.
Dr. Greg Sanders has served NDSU for over 36 years in a variety of roles including Faculty Member, Department Head (for both HDFS and HNES) and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education. Greg was active nationally on the Board on Human Sciences Board of Directors, and held several leadership positions for the Human Sciences Board and Cabinet of the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (Great Plains IDEA).
HDE student wins Gunkleman Award
Meghan Yerhot, a doctoral student in Developmental Science (HDFS) won the prestigious Mary McCannel Gunkelman Award on campus this spring. The award recognizes an individual who makes the most significant and unselfish contributions to creating a happy environment for the enjoyment of NDSU students.
