INSPIRING TEACHER

Inspiring Teacher: Kara Falk, assistant professor of practice in nursing

Published June 2019

Kara Falk teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the NDSU School of Nursing. Her graduate courses include health care delivery systems, finance and informatics as well as practicum courses for nurse practitioner students.

Falk’s positivity and knowledge have helped her become a favorite of nursing students in the classroom and in clinic simulations. Her goal is to help every student grow professionally and personally throughout their time at NDSU.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO PURSUE YOUR PROFESSION?
The nursing profession offered such a diversity of options for things I could do in my career, which made it very appealing to me. My mom was a nurse practitioner, so I had a great example of the NP role and realized shortly after graduating that my heart was in primary care. Becoming an NP was an easy decision. Ever since I can remember, I always wanted to be a teacher. The opportunity to become a professor in the NDSU nursing program was perfect for me.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT TEACHING?
I love the students. Every student is different and they bring new insight, knowledge and experiences into class. It makes for evolving discussions in class and helps students grow.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TEACHING STYLE?
I try to provide content in a relatable manner, so students understand the rationale behind it. I also try to make things applicable to real life. Correlating examples of nursing topics to non-nursing situations often helps students grasp ideas more easily.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FILM OR BOOK FEATURING A TEACHER?
Good Will Hunting, starring Matt Damon and Robin Williams.
