INSPIRING TEACHER

Inspiring Teacher: Trish Strom, assistant professor of practice NDSU School of Nursing

Published November 2015

What do you teach?
Nursing management, leadership and career development for senior nursing students.

How did you decide to pursue your profession?
I transitioned to teaching after working 32 years at various hospitals in a variety of leadership positions.

What do you like best about teaching?
I love seeing students find their own voice, and then using it in ways that show their leadership skills.

What is your favorite class or topic to teach?
Leadership, hands down. It’s a highly reflective course, so I get to know the students I serve in a very lovely way.

How do you know you’ve succeeded with a student or a class?
When they start challenging me. It’s so gratifying to see them pull together all they have learned and to witness the confidence they gain as they build their competence.

What is the most common trait or traits of successful students?
Being open to trying something new and different. A sense of humor helps, too – as I think I am very funny!

What have you learned from your students?
I’ve learned how to ask for grace and forgiveness when I have made mistakes, and they have generously provided both. We’re in this together. There's no doubt about it.

What is your favorite film or book featuring a teacher?
"Mr. Holland’s Opus." It really speaks to what I believe – that the process is the product.

What is your favorite NDSU tradition?
I love to hear the marching band practicing in the fall when I leave for the day. It’s very hard to be anything but happy.
