NDSU students find success in staying organized

Published October 2017

Savannah Miller knows an important part of success in college is staying organized. She relies on a personal calendar to prioritize school work, events and activities.

“I use my planner religiously by planning every part of my day to see what time I have to study, do homework and see how much spare time I truly have,” said Miller, a sophomore family and consumer sciences education major from Mandan, North Dakota.

She keeps reminders in her room and on her computer. She color codes her planner according to each activity.

“I have found that using a planner has been a great trick to help me academically,” said Miller. “I never want to miss a beat on campus, so I like to be prepared.”

Miller and other NDSU students think prioritizing homework and activities is important. NDSU’s STEPS to Success research found that nine of 10 students use personal calendar to prioritize their academic work.

Miller plans to teach high school family and consumer sciences in North Dakota when she graduates.

“NDSU has helped me prepare who I want to be as a teacher, as well as a student who can teach other students,” said Miller.

STEPS to Success

NDSU’s STEPS to Success campaign highlights the actual attitudes and behaviors held by the majority of NDSU students, like Miller, and gives tips on how to achieve success in college. The initiative’s goal is to reduce misperception, which is important because when students know what the actual norm is, many of them adjust what they do to be more in line with what their peers are doing.

The STEPS to Success team gathered information from a large sample of NDSU undergraduates in spring 2016, asking both about their own academic behaviors and attitudes and their perceptions about other students’ academic behaviors and attitudes.
