INSPIRING TEACHER

Roger Green, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering

Published February 2019

Roger Green is the department’s undergraduate coordinator and is highly regarded by students. His friendly, helpful demeanor and his expertise in digital signal processing and time series analysis make him an inspiring example for others.

A native of Wyoming, Green has been a member of the NDSU faculty since 1998. He earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering at the University of Wyoming.

WHAT DO YOU TEACH?

I teach a variety of courses, including Random Processes, Signals and Systems, Applied Digital Signal Processing and Filtering, Communications I and Image Analysis I, among others.

WHAT KINDS OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU PROVDE STUDENTS?

Engineering, by nature, is a hands-on discipline, and I strive to include relevant hands-on experiences in my classes. This includes the use of embedded systems and associated hardware, simulations and real-world signal and image processing.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT TEACHING?

My favorite part of teaching is my students. I enjoy sharing my passion for engineering and engaging students in conversations on engineering topics, and I love seeing my students grow in their technical abilities and professional confidence. Teaching should flow in all directions, and I love when I am challenged by and learn from my students.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON TRAITS OF SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS?

I think the most successful students are also the most curious students. Persistence is likewise crucial. Finally, successful students are not afraid to be challenged, since it is through being challenged that we grow the most.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR STUDENTS?

I have learned a great deal over the years, and my favorite teaching days are the ones where I learn something new from my students. One of the most important things I have learned is to not make assumptions. It is easy to assume or project the reasoning and motivations of others, and my decades of teaching experience have taught me that such assumptions are frequently wrong.

WHAT SHOULD EVERY STUDENT EXPERIENCE BEFORE THEY GRADUATE FROM NDSU?

Before graduation, every student should purposefully plan an experience outside of their area of comfort. This could be something like studying abroad for a semester or taking a course completely outside their chosen discipline or area of interest. Such experiences deeply enrich the college experience and allow students to grow in unexpected and profound ways.
