Steel bridge team continues tradition of success

NDSU’s steel bridge-building team continued a long history of success when it recently took second place at the 2017 American Society of Civil Engineering Midwest Regional Student Conference. The team will advance to the national contest at Oregon State University in May. NDSU has won the national competition more times than any other school in the country, winning in 1995, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010.

The contest involves building a 20-foot steel bridge, spanning a 7-foot river, as quickly and efficiently as possible. The bridge must support 2,500 pounds without deflecting more than three inches, and teams are judged on seven categories. NDSU placed first in lightness, first in efficiency, second in construction speed, second in economy and fourth in bridge stiffness. read more >
