Students use academic services to take their work to the next level

Monday, October 9, 2017

Siddhant Khemani is not afraid to ask for help. It’s a smart move that’s common among NDSU students.

He’s a second-year marketing student, goes to class during the day and works as a residence assistant for one of NDSU’s residence halls. And a few days a week, Khemani visits the ACE tutoring center and Center for Writers to review homework.

“ACE helps me figure out how to tackle class material and helps me solve questions that I have,” said Khemani. “ACE also offers small group study sessions once per week which help me prepare for classes and perform better in them.”

He isn’t the only student to take advantage of NDSU’s academic resources. In fact, NDSU’s STEPS to Success research found most NDSU students use academic tutoring or other academic services at least once a month. The services help when a student is confused, but the services also teach techniques and skills that apply to all courses and help push a student’s work to the next level.

Most NDSU students use academic tutoring or other academic services at least once a month.

Khemani researched universities from his home in Dubai and thought NDSU would be a great fit. “NDSU provides an opportunity for me to learn, explore, find out new things about myself and most importantly be independent,” said Khemani. “NDSU prepares you to be a humble person who is always willing to work and never take a short cut while achieving new heights every day.”

Khemani is interested in working in brand management, possibly in the fashion industry, after graduation.

The ACE tutoring center and the Center for Writers are available to all NDSU students, regardless of major.

STEPS to Success

NDSU’s STEPS to Success campaign highlights the actual attitudes and behaviors held by the majority of NDSU students, like Khemani, and gives tips on how to achieve success in college. The initiative’s goal is to reduce misperception, which is important because when students know what the actual norm is, many of them adjust what they do to be more in line with what their peers are doing.

The STEPS to Success team gathered information from a large sample of NDSU undergraduates in spring 2016, asking both about their own academic behaviors and attitudes and their perceptions about other students’ academic behaviors and attitudes.
