NDSU summer programs help prepare North Dakota students for the future

North Dakota State University hosts many summer programs that give the state’s teachers access to professional development and the state’s students access to hands-on learning experiences that enhance their education.
Many of the programs focus on science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, disciplines, which provide innovations that improve our lives and play an important role in sustaining the nation’s economy. Students are exposed to career options and participate in activities, such as lab research, that help them apply what they learn.
The summer programs are another way NDSU is helping the state’s youngest citizens prepare for future education and careers.
NDSU faculty, staff and students are involved in community service throughout the year. The university hosts many summer programs to help North Dakota students and teachers increase their knowledge in a variety of disciplines.
North Dakota Governor’s Schools
This is a six-week program for high-achieving North Dakota high school sophomores and juniors. The academic programs offer concentrated instruction from NDSU faculty in the classroom, lively discussion, labs, field trips and other activities. The program gives students a glimpse into life as a college student at NDSU, connects students with similar interests and provides world-class instruction on architecture and landscape architecture, engineering, English studies, information technology, laboratory science, math and performing arts.
N.A.T.U.R.E. Camp
The camp introduces tribal college students to STEM disciplines and career opportunities, as well as city and campus life. The goal is to attract these students to four-year STEM programs. Tribal college faculty also can engage in career improvement and lesson development.
Research Experience for Teachers
The professional development program in engineering, research and design is focused on providing knowledge, skills and resources to middle and high school rural teachers in STEM education.
Camp Hope – Healthcare Exploration
The camp gives students in grades 10 through 12 four days of hands-on classes to explore a variety of health professions and health career opportunities while becoming familiar with the hospital and university setting.
STEM Day Bootcamps
Students in grades 9 through 12 participate in a variety of summer camps focused on STEM topics at NDSU. The camps help prepare students for high school STEM courses.
Upward Bound Living Learning Experience
The program is designed to help North Dakota students in grades 9 through 12 succeed in high school. It also helps prepare them for continued success in college by providing academic, cultural and social activities that build skills, motivation and self-confidence.
Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project Conference
The conference, which includes veteran speakers from around the world, provides tips and instruction on international collaboration in communication classes.
Project Lead the Way
The program works with high schools in North Dakota to prepare a larger and more diverse group of students to be successful in engineering and engineering technology programs. Sessions throughout the summer highlight civil engineering and architecture, the principles of engineering, design and modeling, automation and robotics, computer science and teacher training.
Pre-Engineering Education Collaboration
Students from North Dakota reservations looking to begin their studies at a local tribal college before transferring to NDSU will gain useful, educational engineering experience through professors, professional societies and co-op experiences on campus.
