Illustrated history performance to mark Extension Service centennial event

The NDSU Extension Service is celebrating its centennial. To celebrate the May 8, 1914, signing of the Smith-Lever Act, Fargo historian and artist Steve Stark will present an illustrated look at the historic timeline of Extension and the land-grant university.

Stark’s presentation is scheduled for Thursday, May 8, at 1:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Century Theater. The event is open to the public.

The Smith-Lever Act established Extension Services nationwide.

Stark is a former Extension graphic artist and marketer. His illustrated presentation will bring history, art and presentation to life as in historical costume he tells Extension's stories while drawing with skill and speed on a 20- to 30-feet roll of paper.

NDSU Extension Service Director Chris Boerboom said, "One hundred years ago, the national Cooperative Extension Service was launched to deliver information from the land-grant universities to the people of the state. The NDSU Extension Service extends the boundaries of the Fargo campus to all the counties across the state through a network of Extension agents. These local agents are your source for programs and a gateway to area and state Extension specialists and NDSU researchers."

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
