Field day set at Dickinson Research Extension Center

More than 100 different varieties of small grains, as well as several cool-season pulse varieties, will be presented and discussed during the Dickinson Research Extension Center summer field day scheduled for Wednesday, July 9, at the center’s headquarters.

The field day will begin at 8:15 a.m. and conclude at noon, according to Patrick Carr, Dickinson Research Extension Center agronomist.

"Hard red spring and durum wheat, barley, pea and lentil variety trial work will be reviewed," Carr says. "Crop breeders and NDSU Extension Service specialists will headline the presentations."

Presenters include Joel Ransom, NDSU Extension agronomist; Rich Horsley, barley breeder and chair of NDSU plant sciences; Thomas Stefaniak, NDSU pulse crop breeder; John Nowatzki, NDSU agricultural machine systems specialist; and Carr.

Nowatzki will give a major presentation on unmanned aerial systems. He will provide insight on the various types of machines, systems and software available. Unmanned aerial systems are being touted as a management tool to help producers with crop management.

Carr will conclude the field day by providing producers with data on tillage systems and soil health.

The activities will be centered at the Dickinson Research Extension Center headquarters near the corner of State Avenue and Empire Road. The field day is sponsored by the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce.
