NDSU art gallery exhibit to feature Red River Basin

An exhibition featuring photography and landscape architecture displays exploring the Red River Basin will be on display at the NDSU Memorial Union Gallery. “North Water Rising” is scheduled to be on view Dec. 23 through Feb. 5.

The exhibition is the result of a semester-long interdisciplinary agreement between photography students in the Department of Visual Arts and fifth-year landscape architecture students in the Environmental Planning Studio.

Extending from Lake Traverse to Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, the Red River Basin contains more than 28 million acres of land that drains into the Red River.

Landscape architecture students each inventoried a separate 1 million acres from the Turtle Mountains in north-central North Dakota to east of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, to identify emergent programs that could be implemented basinwide.

Photography students used this work as a point of departure for their own projects on the Red River Basin. The projects examine conceptions of the river, its colors and forms, and the interaction between area residents and the dynamic riparian zone.

A closing reception featuring talks from project coordinators Meghan Kirkwood, assistant professor of art, and Dominic Fischer, assistant professor of landscape architecture, and student participants is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 5, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Memorial Union Gallery is on the second floor of the NDSU Memorial Union at 1401 Administrative Ave. Visitor parking is available in the South Union Lot. Free parking is available all day on weekends and after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. The gallery will be open Dec. 23 and 30 and Jan. 7-9 from noon to 4 p.m. Regular gallery hours, which are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on Thursdays, will resume Jan. 13.
