Seminar on DNA replication scheduled

The NDSU Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry and Biochemistry have scheduled a presentation by Ted Weinert, professor of molecular and cellular biology at the University of Arizona, Tucson, on Friday, Feb. 20, at 3 p.m. in Van Es 101.

Weinert's talk is titled, "Exploring Chromosome Instability: DNA Replication, Telomeres and Other Mysteries!"

According to Weinert's abstract, there is a wealth of information in the field of DNA replication, but little is known about the actual molecular mechanism of the replication, and even less about the consequences that occur when it goes wrong. It is speculated that DNA replication errors contribute not only to local changes in DNA sequences, but also to changes in the genome, often with dire consequences to the cell.

Weinert asks these questions: How do these global changes really come about? Can we learn something interesting about chromosome biology and dynamics by studying genome instability?

Everyone is welcome to attend the seminar.
