NDSU has received "2014 Tree Campus USA" designation from the Arbor Day Foundation. The national program honors institutions for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in conservation efforts. It the third time NDSU has been recognized. 

"Trees are an important component to a lively and vibrant campus," said Michael Ellingson, director of Facilities Management. "Winning this award for the third consecutive time is a great honor for NDSU but also shows the commitment of staff, professors and students that have invested hard work to achieve this accomplishment."

To be considered for the honor, NDSU met the five standards for sustainable campus forestry. The university has established a tree advisory committee, presented evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated expenditures for its tree program, holds an Arbor Day observance and sponsors student service-learning projects.

"Your diligence in improving the environment and quality of life at NDSU contributes to a healthier, more sustainable world for us all," wrote May Sweeney, program manager for the Arbor Day Foundation, in a Feb. 16 letter acknowledging the award.

The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit conservation and education organization that aims to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. It created the Tree Campus USA national program with Toyota in 2008.
