Braaten to present colloquium

Ann Braaten, assistant professor of apparel, design and hospitality management at NDSU, will present “Gaining Historical Insight Through Material Culture Studies” as part of the Department of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies colloquium series. The colloquium is set for Friday, Jan. 23, at 3 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Meadowlark room.

Braaten’s research focus is on historic textiles and clothing. She uses a material culture studies approach to examine the history of a group through the objects they made and used.

Braaten earned her doctorate at the University of Minnesota. Her dissertation is titled “Germans from Russia Immigrants' Shawls Brought to the USA: A Material Culture Study.” In 2006, she published “Women Creating, Women Providing: Hastings Needlework Company” in the Minnesota History Journal. Braaten is curator of the Emily P. Reynolds Historic Costume Collection.
