Memorial service scheduled for longtime faculty member

Park

Chung S. Park, professor of animal sciences, died Jan. 18 at age 74. A celebration of his life is planned for Saturday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.

More information is available here.

Park joined the NDSU faculty in 1978 and served as interim chair of the Department of Animal Sciences in 1994.

Park first became known for his research in dairy and milk production. His stair-step nutrition for growth and development of dairy heifers continues to be widely recognized in the dairy nutrition circles. Later in his career, Park transitioned into the biomedical field and received national attention with his work on the influence maternal nutrition can have on prevention of breast cancer in offspring.

"Dr. Park was a true servant scientist," said Eric Berg, professor of meat and animal sciences. "To him, the only purpose of scientific discovery was to enhance the quality of life for both animals and humans."

Park earned his bachelor's degree at Seoul National University, Korea; his master's degree in animal nutrition from the University of Georgia: and his doctorate in nutritional physiology at Virginia Polytechnic and State University.

His honors included Distinguished Professor Lectureships at the University of New Hampshire in 1993, Virginia Tech in 2002, the University of Minnesota in 2004 and Texas A&M University in 2012. He was named NDSU's Faculty Lectureship Award in 2000 and received the NDSU Eugene Dahl Excellence in Research Award in 2005.
