Competition raises more than $4,500 for two families

Students from two NDSU colleges raised more than $4,500 for a pair of families battling health issues. 

Ambassadors from the College of Health Professions and the College of Engineering collected $4,540.86 during the sixth annual “Battle of the Cents-es” fundraising event, held Feb. 22-26.

The donations will be used to support the families of Katelyn Quinn and Brian Alexander. Katelyn, 3, suffers from a rare genetic disease that causes several uncontrolled seizures each day. Brian has endured radiation treatment, four rounds of chemotherapy and two surgeries due to cancer in the last year. A 2001 NDSU graduate, Brian, and his wife, Maureen, have a 4-year-old son, Eddie.

The College of Engineering won the competition. Coins collected during the week counted toward the team’s totals and paper money was deducted from the team’s totals. The College of Engineering collected $646 In paper bills and $1,042.69 in coins for a point total of 396.69. The College of Health Professions collected $1,310 in paper bills and $1,542.17 in coins for a point total of 232.17.

All of the money collected will be donated to the Quinn and Alexander families.
