The first American Indian Public Health Day is slated to kick off a full week of events celebrating National Public Health Week at NDSU.
The NDSU Department of Public Health in collaboration with the NDSU Public Health Association is set to host the inaugural American Indian Public Health Day Monday, April 4. The day will consist of holistic health-focused events.
Activities are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union Arikara Room with an opening prayer by Willard Yellow Bird. Donald Warne, director of the NDSU Department of Public Health, and Scott Davis, executive director of the North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission, will provide opening remarks. A traditional flute performance will precede an 11 a.m. panel of American Indian Master of Public Health graduates and students.
Panel speakers are Amber Cardinal, Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation; Shannon White, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate; Tasha Peltier, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe; Pearl Walker Swaney, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Ojibwe; Jacob Walker Swaney, Potawatomi and Shawnee; Cheyenne Brady, Sac and Fox Tribe, and Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation. They will share their experiences in the public health program.
A traditional meal followed by a campus geocaching event will conclude the day.
The American Indian Public Health Day is expected to serve as a stepping stone for a national event in 2017. Participants and supporters are encouraged to use the hashtag #4Directions4Health.
All events throughout the week are free and open to the public.
