NDSU honor society recognized with national award

NDSU’s chapter of the Alpha Epsilon Honor Society has received the Most Outstanding Chapter Award from the national organization. The group was recognized during the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers annual international meeting July 17 in Orlando, Florida.

May graduate Glen Peterson, from Eagan, Minnesota, was chapter president for the past academic year. He said NDSU was selected primarily because of its work with the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering and Agricultural Systems Management Peer Mentor Program.

“This program matched incoming first-year students in the ABEN and ASM departments with exceptional third- and fourth-year students who served as personalized mentors,” Peterson explained. “Our goal was to provide an easier transition to college life for our newest students and provide information, guidance and reassurance.”

Chapter members submitted an award application to show the group’s progress and development.

“The credit absolutely has to go to the volunteer mentors of the ABEN and ASM departments.” Peterson said, recognizing the work of fellow students Brett Hultgren, Coy Bata, Dillon Mathies, Dorothy Floren, Isaac Bower, Joel Kern, John Olhoft, Katie Gisi, Logan Miller, Nick Steffl and Talon Mack. “They are the real champions of this program and I couldn't thank them enough for their unwavering support.”

The chapter adviser is Xinhua Jia, assistant professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering.

Alpha Epsilon’s goals are to promote high ideals of the engineering profession; recognize agricultural, biological and food engineers who demonstrate the qualities of character, scholarship and professional attainment; and support engineering improvements to better serve mankind.

Members are selected based on being in the upper portion of their engineering class, and exhibiting quality character, leadership and personality.
