Varland receives national fellowship in design

Rooth Varland, NDSU Department of Theatre coordinator, is the recipient of the National Festival Faculty Fellowship in Design. She will travel to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to accept her award April 13-18. The fellowship is from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

The fellowships provide faculty development opportunities at the national festival in Washington, D.C. Once every eight years the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival selects a designer to receive this national award.

The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival is a national organization that celebrates the educational and creative process of university and college theatre. It promotes professional standards and provides students and faculty with opportunities to bridge the academic and professional worlds.

Varland also will travel to Houston in March to design costumes for the Grace Note Productions opera “Savitri” by Gustav Holst. Based on an ancient Indian story, “Savitri” is about a clever young bride who, through the power of her devotion, talks death into releasing her husband.
