The aquatics addition to NDSU’s Wallman Wellness Center is open for business. The eagerly anticipated addition’s first day of operations was Sept. 19.

A grand opening ceremony is planned for Thursday, Sept. 29, at 4:30 p.m.

The $11 million project includes a leisure pool, lap pool, sauna, fire pit, a “wet classroom” for activities such as scuba instruction, gender-neutral locker rooms and additional women’s and men’s locker rooms.

“It has been a very exciting opening day," said Ryan MacMaster, aquatics coordinator. “At 6 a.m., there was a line of more than 25 students waiting to use Aquatics. Each lane in the lap pool had about four swimmers and the spa and leisure pool were also popular with students playing water volleyball, basketball, using the vortex and relaxing in the spa. There were more than 50 students and members using Aquatics during our 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. opening.”

“Providing a safe environment for students and members is our top priority. Anytime Aquatics is open, lifeguards will be on duty to ensure everyone’s safety. Rules will be posted in each pool area, and lifeguards will strictly enforce them,” said MacMaster.

During fall semester, staff will track information on when and what areas students use. “Water exercise classes begin in October and intramurals and club sports will be permitted to reserve portions of aquatics during non-peak times this spring,” MacMaster said. “We have a lot of great ideas for programming that will appeal to all students and members.”

The aquatics addition is entirely funded by students. Students voted in spring 2013 to approve construction and bond financing through student fees. The fees increased this fall to support operation of the facility.
