NDSU is set to host the second annual Showcase of Student Writing, scheduled for Monday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Plains Ballroom. The NDSU community and the public are invited to attend.

The event will celebrate the achievements of student writers and highlight the diverse range of writing created by undergraduate students. More than 40 teachers and 1,000 students in the Departments of English, Modern Languages and Communication are expected to participate.

“Language is the fuel of all human endeavors,” said Bruce Maylath, professor of English and director of Upper-Division Writing.  “It’s rare to see any human activity succeed without language. What’s more, written language creates a record of what humans are thinking over time. The Showcase of Student Writing displays NDSU students’ best thinking over the past year, recorded for others to read.”

Participating students will be recognized for their efforts with “pop-up” prizes, including T-shirts, gift cards and books, that will be presented by anonymous roaming judges.

“We are delighted that we have more than doubled the number of students who will display their writing this year, and we are extremely grateful for the support of this event across the university,” said Lisa Arnold, assistant professor of English and director of First-Year Writing.

Sponsors of the event include: Division of Student Affairs; College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Engineering; College of Health Professions; College of Human Development and Education; Office of Teaching and Learning; NDSU Libraries; Department of English; Department of Criminal Justice and Political Science, Department of Communication, Department of History, Philosophy and Religion; Department of Modern Languages; Department of Sociology and Anthropology; and the Women’s and Gender Studies Program.
