NDSU to offer new minor in creative writing

Students can soon seek a minor in creative writing through NDSU’s Department of English. The classes are now in place and students can declare the minor starting during the fall 2017 semester.

The minor is designed to teach students the fundamentals to write poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction and scripts. The program is 21 credits, including 15 credits in creative writing courses and six credits in literature.

Classes include an introductory class, two classes focused on a specific genre of the student’s choosing, a class on the creative process and an advanced writing workshop. Along with the writing classes, participating students will take a class on literary analysis and one literature elective.

According to program organizers, the minor provides opportunities for students to explore their interest in the writing arts and encourages a lifelong joy of writing.

“Students have been requesting more creative writing courses for many years, and so we’re jazzed to be offering a whole fleet of new options, with more to come,” said Cindy Nichols, senior lecturer of English. “The new minor will provide close mentoring for serious writers, a creative outlet for students and a valuable supplement to any major. Maybe best of all, we have a chance to build a diverse and supportive community focused on a love of words.”

Brady Bergeson, senior lecturer of English, said the minor will give students time to develop as writers. “They’ll have a chance to see projects through, from ideas to finished manuscripts ready for real audiences,” he said. “Our goal is to help students become more inventive and flexible thinkers and makers – that they really come to understand how their creative process works and who they are as writers.”

The elective courses are diverse and include such as titles as British Literature, American Literature, Poetry of Rock, American Road Book, Fantasy and Science Fiction, Film Genres and Styles, Shakespeare and Romantic Literature.
