NDSU will offer a special public history course that will help people in Emmons County connect with their past.

The three-credit course, History 491/690, is scheduled for May 22-June 10. Students will first have training and planning sessions on campus, followed by hands-on activities at the Emmons County Museum in Linton, North Dakota. The course will be led by Angela Smith, assistant professor of history and NDSU’s public historian.

“In rural, sparsely populated areas of North Dakota, long-time stewards of local history are aging. They have faithfully recorded and maintained the histories of small towns throughout the state for decades,” Smith said. “This summer field school creates an opportunity for students and communities to work together to learn and interpret the history of the state.”

During their time at the museum, students will focus on best-practices in digitization, museum work and public engagement. They will catalog artifacts, write exhibit text, digitize photos and conduct oral histories with local residents.
