Joel Caton, professor of animal sciences, has been selected to present the annual Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Lectureship. His lecture is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Plains room.

“Dr. Caton has consistently been one of the most productive faculty members in the Department of Animal Sciences,” said nominator Greg Lardy, animal sciences department head and associate vice president for agriculture affairs. “I believe Dr. Caton is exceptionally well qualified for the Phi Kappa Phi Lectureship. His ability to communicate effectively is demonstrated by his record of invited presentations across the globe.”

Caton joined the NDSU faculty in 1988 after being a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Caton conducts research and teaches courses in ruminant nutrition and digestive physiology. His research interests include ruminant nutrition, digestive physiology and developmental programming related to maternal nutrition, growth and development, protein metabolism, forage utilization and trace mineral metabolism. Caton's research program has produced numerous publications and has been supported by grants from federal, stat, and industry partners. In addition, he has advised or co-advised many graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

At NDSU, Caton has received the college’s Excellence in Research Award and the Jordan A. Engberg Presidential Professorship. He also received the American Society of Animal Science-American Feed Industry Association Ruminant Nutrition Award and the Cromwell Research in Minerals Award.

He was elected to the American Society of Animal Science board of directors in 2016. The organization has more than 6,000 members around the world.

Caton earned his bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces; his master’s degree in animal science at the University of Missouri, Columbia; and his doctorate in ruminant nutrition from New Mexico State University.

Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Lectureship was established in 2015 by NDSU President Bresciani and the university’s chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society to share high impact faculty research, scholarship, and creative activity with the broad community in the land-grant tradition.
