NDSU and Dakota State University, Madison, South Dakota, are teaming up to present the state’s first GenCyber camp, scheduled for June 25-29 on the NDSU campus.

The summer camp, designed for 90 high school students, is funded through a grant from the National Security Agency and National Science Foundation. There is no fee to attend the camp, and free lunch and snacks will be served to the participants.

The curriculum will cover three core areas – programming, networking and cybersecurity– according to camp coordinator Pratap Kotala, NDSU senior lecturer of computer science.

“The purpose of the camp is to increase interest and awareness about cybersecurity challenges and opportunities, and also to help students understand the importance of safe online behavior and teach them to become good digital citizens,” Kotala explained.

Faculty from NDSU and DSU will offer a number of break-out sessions on different topics. “Most of these sessions are designed to be hands-on so participants can learn by doing,” Kotala said.

This year’s camp is not residential, meaning parents or family members will needto make arrangements to drop the students in the morningand pick them up in the evening each day of the camp.

All students attending the camp will receive a free Raspberry Pi and other hardware and software needed to participate in the core and elective sessions. The Raspberry Pi gives students a platform to work with hands-on programming, security and networking activities.
