Larry Reynolds, University Distinguished Professor of animal sciences, recently served on a peer review committee for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.

The program is supported and managed by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and was established when a bill sponsored by Sen. J. William Fulbright passed the Senate by unanimous consent in 1946.

Reynolds served on the Regional Peer Review Committee, Spain 2. He and his fellow reviewers met for a full day at the Institute of International Education offices in Washington, D.C., where they made funding recommendations on 62 applications for Fulbright U.S. Scholar proposals for the coming year. The IIE administers the entire Fulbright Program, including the FulbrightU.S. Scholar Program and Fulbright U.S.Student Program, for the StateDepartment.

“This was a tremendous experience, and really opened my eyes to how competitive the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program is, and how fortunate I was to receive one of these awards,” said Reynolds.

Reynolds received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar award last year, and from September through December taught in the in the master’s degree program in “Biology and Technology of Reproduction in Mammals”at the University of Murcia, Spain. In addition, he established an ongoing research collaboration with the Physiology of Reproduction Group in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the veterinary school at the University of Murcia. He also participated in several other activities of the veterinary school, including a public outreach event, as a keynote speaker at a symposium and as a member of the tribunal for a doctoral student.

The Fulbright Scholar Program sponsors U.S. and foreign participants for exchanges in all areas of endeavor, including the sciences, business, academe, public service, government and the arts. It offers nearly 470 teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards in more than 125 countries.
