NDSU event to honor late alumnus, architect

The NDSU Department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture is set to host a special event honoring late alumnus Denby Deegan, an accomplished Native American architect.

The event, “Denby Deegan, Surrounded by Enemy – Arikara/Hunkpapa” is scheduled for Friday, April 5, at 3 p.m. on Renaissance Hall’s fifth floor. Speakers include Deegan’s son, Justin Deegan, and NDSU architecture alumnus Michael Laverdure.

Deegan, BArch ’65 and BS ’65, architecture, was one of the first Indigenous architects in the country. He died Dec. 24, 2018, at the age of 77.

Deegan was one of the founding members of the American Indian Council of Architects and Engineers. The nonprofit organization was established to promote the development of American Indians in the professions of architecture and engineering. During his 45-year career, much of his work was for and about the Arikara culture and heritage. He was a member of the Three Affiliated Tribes, also known as the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation.
