NDSU Tartan design competition underway

Apparel, design and hospitality management majors are competing to design the official Tartan of North Dakota State University. Tartan Project submissions are due Feb. 11.

Holly Bastow-Shoop, head of the department, said she hopes the winning tartan will debut at Homecoming 2011 through products like shawls, stadium blankets, ties, vests, scarves and hats, and that new items will be available each year as future students in the department develop and market products.

Up to 150 entries are expected, making for a challenging decision for the six-member tartan selection committee. Entries will be judged for originality and aesthetic, and representation and interpretation of NDSU’s history and colors. The committee will select three tartans to forward to NDSU students, faculty and staff for a final vote in mid February. The winning tartan will be verified and reviewed for its originality by the Tartan Registry in Edinburgh, Scotland, a division of the Scottish Government, and then registered as the official tartan of NDSU. However, the university will own the tartan design. The winning designer will receive $500, first runner-up $300 and second runner-up $200.

The selection committee includes President Dean L. Bresciani; Sherri Schmidt, Alumni Association executive director; Gene Taylor, athletic director; Amy Rupiper Taggart, Faculty Senate president; Kris Mickelson, Staff Senate president; and Kevin Black, student body president.

Members of the Tartan Project Committee are Ann Ragan and Sara Sunderlin, lecturers of apparel and design; Amelia Asperin, assistant professor of hospitality and tourism management; Jaeha Lee, assistant professor of apparel and textiles; and Bastow-Shoop.
