Program spotlight: Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

If you’re looking for a rewarding career, NDSU will put you on the path to success.

NDSU’s Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering is a respected leader in operations, manufacturing research, industrial logistics and quality control. Students gain first-hand knowledge as faculty bring cutting-edge technologies into the classroom, and companies want our students.

“I love the idea of combining math and science with interacting and working with people,” said senior Megan Thorson, an industrial engineering and management major from Fargo. “Industrial engineers work every day to make people’s jobs safer, more productive and better overall. I am able to use my passion of helping people and managing teams to accomplish goals. And there are many kinds of companies looking to hire graduates from this discipline of engineering.”

NDSU offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial engineering and management and in manufacturing engineering, along with a doctorate in industrial and manufacturing engineering. NDSU’s programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

“I love the program here at NDSU – I feel like each of my professors genuinely cares about my success and education,” said Thorson, who plans a career as a project engineer or manager for a Midwest company. “The department has continued to grow each year I have been at NDSU, yet it is still small enough that l feel like more than just a number. By having smaller class sizes in the courses, you get to know your professors and fellow students very well.”

In addition to her courses, Thorson is a manufacturing engineering intern at Marvin Windows and Doors in West Fargo. “I put the skills and knowledge I have learned at NDSU into practice,” she said. “I found that even my lower-level courses have real-life applications that I can use in the working world.”
