Tom Isern, University Distinguished Professor of history, has been recognized with the Joseph S. Height Literary Award, presented by the Germans from Russia Heritage Society. He received official notification of the honor on July 11.

The award is for the best essay dealing with the history and culture of the Germans from Russia. The award-winning essay is "Heroes of German-Russian Country: Making the Most of Our Narrative Heritage," which was published in the October 2019 issue of Heritage Review, the journal of the society.

The annual award is named for a distinguished scholar of German-Russian studies, Joseph S. Height, who wrote several landmark works on the German settlements in Russia.

“It was a pleasure to receive the personal note of congratulations from Margaret Height, daughter of Dr. Height, on behalf of the awards committee,” Isern said. “It makes me feel good to see scholarly work like this appreciated by the people who are stakeholders in the subject. I owe a lot of thanks to the German-Russian people of North Dakota, especially those of Emmons, Logan and McIntosh Counties, for telling me their stories, and also to Humanities North Dakota for supporting my work in German-Russian country.”
