David R. Steward, NDSU professor and chair of the civil and environmental engineering and the construction management and engineering departments, is set to publish a new book, titled “Analytic Element Method.” The book will be published by Oxford University Press and is set to be released Oct. 17.

The 336-page book, which has a sub-title “Complex Interactions of Boundaries and Interfaces,” assembles a broad range of mathematical and computational approaches to solve important problems in engineering and science. Problems are divided into sets of elements, and methods are formulated to solve conditions along their boundaries and interfaces. Solutions are shown in the illustration-rich textbook. Example computer software to implement figures is freely available from the publisher’s website.

“This book represents the first time that the methods of the Analytic Element Method have been formulated comprehensively to solve problems in flow and conduction, waves, and elasticity,” said Steward. “It puts forth a framework of study and a viewpoint of our world as a collection of interacting elements that is novel and has the potential to promote scientific inquiry and investigations across broad fields of science and engineering.”

The book is an outgrowth of Steward’s computational modeling advances over the last 25 years.

Steward joined the NDSU faculty in 2018. He earned his doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota. He holds the Walter B. Booth Distinguished Professorship.
