A book co-edited by Bruce Maylath, professor of English and director of Upper-Division Writing, has received international recognition. “Translation and Localization” was recognized with the Distinguished Book on Business Communication by the Association for Business Communication.

The 274-page book, with 31 illustrations, was published in 2019 by Routledge. It is co-edited by Kirk St.Amant of Louisiana Tech University.

“With the explosion in global trade, and the consequent need for technical documentation in the languages of products’ users all around the world, Kirk and I first discussed the need for this book at a conference in Montréal back in 2008,” Maylath said. “With the help of NDSU travel grants, I was able to recruit contributing authors among top-notch practicing translators and professors of translation studies when we convened at various language-for-specific-purposes conferences in Europe, where roughly half of all the world’s translation business takes place. The resulting book is a venue in which translators let professional and technical communicators, especially monolingual English-speakers in North America, see what’s needed for accurate translation when technical documents, like instructions, manuals and help menus, are drafted and edited.”

The book features real-life scenarios and insights from a variety of professionals and provides comprehensive guidance for technical communicators.

The Distinguished Book on Business Communication award recognizes an outstanding book or edited volume that has made a significant contribution to the discipline and was written or edited by a member of the Association.

The award recipients receive a plaque, one-year full membership in the association and a monetary award of $500.
