Filipe Matias, NDSU plant sciences research scientist, received The Plant Phenome Journal Outstanding Article of the Year award for 2021. Titled “FIELDimageR: An R Package to Analyze Orthomosaic Images from Agricultural Field Trials,” the article was published May 12, 2020.

Matias is a research scientist in NDSU’s spring wheat breeding germplasm program. He utilizes FIELDimageR to study how spectral reflectance information can be used to improve genetic gains in plant breeding and agricultural research. He has successfully evaluated thousands of field plots in North Dakota and Wisconsin and has created a networking group called “PhenomeForce” which brings together experts to share information, collaborate and build partnerships. The goal of the group is to “make phenomics easy for everybody” Matias says.

Matias grew up in the Cerrado area of Brazil working on a small family farm during summers. He earned his bachelor’s degree in agronomy at Federal University of Uberlandia, Master of Science degree at São Paulo State University and doctorate in genetics and plant breeding at Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture at the University of São Paulo. He worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, prior to moving to NDSU.

The American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America present Outstanding Paper Awards yearly for articles published in the preceding two years. The winning papers across all journals and divisions also are published in the Outstanding Papers of the Year virtual issue.
