NDSU Soybean Symposium set for March 17

Scientists of all disciplines are invited to be a part of expanding research opportunities through the 2022 NDSU Soybean Symposium scheduled for March 17 at the Memorial Union.

The second annual symposium is hosted by Carrie Miranda, assistant professor and project leader for the soybean breeding program at NDSU. Registration is free and includes meals and snacks each day.

“The main goal of the symposium is to bring soybean-focused scientists, students and private organizations from all disciplines together at one event,” said Miranda.

According to Miranda, the symposium will showcase NDSU soybean research at a national level.

Students attending the symposium can participate in a competition for a cash prize for best research presentation. Abstract submissions for the competition will be accepted on the registration form and are due March 5.

“It’s an opportunity for students to present their soybean research and contribute to the future of the soybean industry, and for soybean researchers of many disciplines to facilitate new collaborations,” Miranda said.

Artwork created by Hunter Seminole, a recent NDSU graduate, is featured in a poster that each symposium attendee will receive as a gift.

The symposium features keynote speaker Jianxin Ma, professor of agronomy at Purdue University, on March 17. Ma has received international recognition for his innovative research on plant comparative genomics and soybean genetics. He has written more than 100 publications in high-impact journals and has served on the editorial board of several scientific journals. He is also the primary inventor on three patents and patent applications.

Miranda’s project objectives are to produce high-yield varieties while discovering new genetic mechanisms for useful traits to ensure North Dakota farmers have access to superior soybean varieties.

Sponsors of the 2022 Soybean Symposium include NDSU, the North Dakota Soybean Council and Bayer.

Registrations are due on March 6.
