NDSU business analytics certificate to be offered

NDSU will offer an undergraduate certificate in business analytics starting in fall 2022. The certificate will prepare students for careers that value analytics as an integral part of business.

Business analytics helps companies understand the success and setbacks of the organization. Through data, employees can make well-informed decisions to benefit the company.

“It is very important to support students’ development of business analytic skills and improve their understanding of how business organizations can utilize their data to gain competitive advantages,” said Fone Pengnate, associate professor of management information systems. “We plan to make it available to all NDSU students who are interested in business analytics.”

The certificate makes students more valuable in the job market, and they learn skills to prepare for a future career.

Elin Baker, a junior from Champlin, Minnesota, is majoring in management information systems and plans to eventually add a certificate of business analytics.

“It will give me key skills that are used in the current job market and will increase my likelihood of being the top candidate for jobs that I want,” Baker said.

“The demand for qualified business analysts is surging,” Pengnate said. “This program will clearly increase students’ marketability in the job market. The 15-credit certificate program “covers key areas in business data analytics, which has been growing dramatically and become an essential function in many business organizations.”

The certificate also will help specify student’s interests to future employers. “It just shows companies exactly what I’m interested in because MIS is such a big field,” said Baker, who enjoys organizing data and looking at statistics, which directly correlates with her major.

“I think that other students should definitely look into it, because it is such a huge, growing field in the business area and you still can do other things with it,” Baker said.
