The chapter is titled “Rural nursing: American Indians and Alaska Natives in Indian Country.

“This course textbook focuses on the practical issues and challenges faced by nurses working with rural populations,” according to the website of publisher DEStech Publications Inc. “The textbook provides background information on chapter topics such as the aging rural population, mental health, substance abuse, rural veterans, telehealth, interprofessional education and introduces evidence-based strategies to facilitate quality care.”

Heuer’s research interests include health disparities, rural health issues, diverse populations, community and public health, nursing education, leadership and workforce. She is a previous Robert Wood Johnson Executive Fellow from 2002 to 2005.

Heuer also produced the award-winning documentary “Essence of Healing: the Journey of American Indian Nurses.”
