College of Engineering celebrates scholarship recipients and donors

The NDSU College of Engineering held its fifth annual Scholarship and Awards Reception Oct. 13 in the NDSU Memorial Union Oċet̄i Ṡak̄owiɳ Ballroom. The event was a celebration of student scholarship recipients, scholarship donors and faculty and staff award winners.

As part of its dedication to providing quality, affordable education, the College of Engineering offers a variety of need-based and merit-based awards to help pay for tuition and other costs. This year, students in the college were awarded more than $2.5 million.

“If we are all working together, there are so many things that can be accomplished which cannot be as individuals. As engineers, we can be a community united by a shared goal and focus of building up our society with what we each have to offer” said Abigail Henderson, a mechanical engineering senior and scholarship recipient from Hudson, Iowa. “More than simply a thank you for financial support, I also want to offer deep gratitude for modeling what it means for all of us to work together, giving to others out of what you have been given to develop the health of the whole community.”

Scholarships are awarded to incoming and current students. The winners are selected by the Office of Admission and college or department scholarship committees based on criteria established by donors for each scholarship.

“The reason I believe passionately in helping provide opportunities for students to afford a college education is because I have lived these opportunities,” said Michael Kessler, dean of the College of Engineering. “It was two large scholarships that gave me the opportunity to pursue my dream of a degree in engineering without incurring significant debt, and allowing me to focus on my studies as an undergraduate student.”

Scholarship applications for current and incoming College of Engineering students are accepted Dec. 1 through March 1, 2023. Applications can be completed online.
