Top high school students from across North Dakota will showcase their work this week as 2012 Governor’s School concludes.
During the last six weeks, they have lived on the North Dakota State University campus, worked with NDSU faculty in a variety of disciplines, taken leadership classes and field trips and participated in service learning projects. On July 12-14, they will showcase what they learned through performances and presentations that are open to the public:
Thursday, July 12
• Band concert and ice cream social, 7 p.m., Festival Concert Hall
• Performing arts vaudeville show, 8 p.m., Askanase Auditorium
Friday, July 13
• Science presentations, 8:30 a.m., Sudro Hall room 26
• Science poster session, 2:30 p.m., Memorial Union Ballroom
• Fine arts presentation and reception, 6:30 p.m., Memorial Union Ballroom
Saturday, July 14
• Closing ceremony, 10 a.m., Memorial Union Ballroom
During the closing ceremony, Governor’s School coordinators and students will talk about their experiences and completion certificates will be presented.
“It has been a great experience,” said Kaska Weidman, a Governor’s School participant from Parshall, N.D. “I have made lots of friends and have learned very much. Until now, I haven’t had a chance to really get any advanced classes, but Governor’s School gives me a chance to get a taste of what college will be like. I feel I have gained so much and I want everyone to have a chance to experience this.”
This summer’s Governor’s School began June 3 with 80 North Dakota high school students arriving on campus. Since then, students have learned directly from NDSU faculty in areas such as laboratory science, mathematics, information technology, English and performing arts, which alternates each year with visual arts. They also have participated in life and leadership classes and enjoyed a field trip to Minneapolis, a canoe trip and service projects.
