Sen. Tim Flakoll and Robert Vallie, a May 2013 NDSU graduate and former student member of the State Board of Higher Education, were recognized by the North Dakota Student Association for dedication to representing the interests of students. William Woodworth, past president of the student association, presented awards to Flakoll and Vallie May 10 at NDSU.

Flakoll received the Student Advocate Award for demonstrating significant, positive improvements to higher education in North Dakota during the academic year. “Sen. Flakoll has boldly advocated for students over the course of his distinguished career in the North Dakota Legislature,” Woodworth said in a news release from the student association. “Not only has he been critical in the development of the new higher education funding formula and growing the state’s merit-based scholarship program, but he also reaches out to help student leaders understand the legislative process and how to develop their own leadership skills.”

Flakoll, who also is NDSU downtown director of operations and Tri-College University provost, said, “I was thrilled because education is my life and to be recognized by students from across the state is a great honor.”

Vallie received the Most Dedicated Delegate Award for being the most committed to the interests of students during the academic year. “Not only has Vallie demonstrated his commitment to students by serving as the past student member of the board beyond the call of duty, but during this legislative session he defended student interests even when he had no obligation to do so,” Woodworth said in a news release. “He has always been the most informed student at any meeting.”

Vallie said he was honored to be recognized by his peers.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation’s top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
