NDSU nursing students are back in action during spring semester, continuing to help healthcare professionals administer COVID-19 vaccinations in the region.
More than 50 nursing students who are trained and supervised by nursing faculty to give vaccinations are helping throughout spring semester.
“What stood out to me the most during the vaccination clinic was how every person receiving a vaccine was there because they wanted to be. Many people I vaccinated expressed how happy and excited they were to finally receive their vaccines,” said Jaci Neels, NDSU nursing student from Barnesville, Minnesota.
“It was a remarkable experience being a part of something so personal and important to so many people. I am so grateful to have been a part of such an amazing experience and to have been able to give back to the community in this way during what have been such difficult times,” said Neels.
Another nursing student from Bismarck, North Dakota, noted how appreciative people are during vaccine clinics. “Everyone was so excited to be there and receive their vaccinations. I was so surprised by the hope that the vaccination was giving these patients,” said Hannah Klipfel. “Many talked with me about their plans for after being vaccinated and how their life would change.”
Student Jaci Neels said patients also shared their stories while getting vaccinated.
“Many individuals have been unable to see their families during this pandemic—receiving the vaccine was going to change that for them. Having the opportunity to learn the personal stories and reasonings behind wanting to be vaccinated was a really eye-opening and heartwarming experience,” said Neels.
When she graduates, Neels is interested in a working in obstetrics and also is participating in a variety of clinical experiences that may open other opportunities in which to specialize.
Klipfel plans to pursue additional education to become a nurse practitioner.
