Welcome to Psychology
Our department offers award-winning instruction and world-class research in a variety of areas including health, social, developmental, clinical, and visual & cognitive neuroscience. You’ll take a scientific approach to the study of brain, behavior and mental processes with a commitment to diversity, inclusivity, equity and respect. Beyond our innovative and active courses, you’ll have opportunities for hands-on research in a variety of facilities, including the Center for Visual and Cognitive Neuroscience. Our students can also pursue field experiences in community settings for academic credit.
A variety of fulfilling career options are available with a psychology major. Due to our strong academic programs, about a third of our students continue to graduate school in psychology or other professional programs such as medicine, optometry, health, law, business or counseling.
NDSU psychology majors help others through field experiences in community service agencies, collaborate with faculty on world-class research projects and attend presentations by top scientists from around the world. You'll get experiences that matter.

NDSU is one of just three universities in the six-state upper Midwest region designated as an R1 research institution by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Carnegie’s R1 distinction is its highest classification and is presented to only the top research institutions in the country.
Our laboratory facilities include advanced equipment for studying human perception, brain function, information processing and social interaction. Because our program emphasizes the scientific approach to the study of behavior, student research is strongly encouraged. Undergraduates often serve as research assistants working closely with faculty and graduate students. Current research includes projects on health, vision, virtual reality/multi-sensory integration, information processing, behavior modification, emotion, depression, history of psychology and group process.
Our faculty is recognized on a national and international level for their professional status and contributions to the new body of scientific knowledge. You’ll graduate equipped with excellent classroom, laboratory, and field training, as well as a sound research experience.
